What kind of product will you choose?
Aside from the color and aesthetic elements of it, your choices will ultimately depend on the desired end results. Diffusers work on a different principle. Unlike sound absorption panels that are made of soft materials with lots of air pockets that prevent sound waves from bouncing back at you, so a sound diffuser will allow the sound to reflect—but it breaks up the reflection. The result is that you don’t get a clear echo. Diffusers can be made of any number of different types of materials. Choose something that compliments or matches the existing décor. You might also add elements that provide new texture, color and patterns.
If you wish to use a Barrier System, they are typically installed inside the wall cavity or under surface treatments. They are designed to create an insulating envelope which will contain or exclude the movement of sound.
One of the most effective noise stop barriers you can use is a mass loaded vnyl, such as Acoustiblok. This dense membrane is proven to be highly effective at isolating and blocking mechanical noise.
Overall, there are so many materials to choose from and you may have to experiment with placement of these if you do not want to employ an acoustical consultant to test the space. By process of adding and subtracting elements of diffusion and absorption, you can fine tune the space to gain optimal results.
